Hi, I'm James

After nearly a decade in startup software engineering and hobbyist game development, I'm now focused on two intertwined passions: building tools that empower others to create and developing my first commercial game. Through KokuTech I offer both the tools that I use to optimize my workflows and insights on how I approach building a brand and games on my own.

The tools I build are completely free and private by design: no accounts, no ads, and everything saves locally to your browser. Try them out and let me know what you think!

My approach focuses on three key principles:
  • • Making tools accessible and affordable (free!)
  • • Seamless integration with existing workflows
  • • Solving specific challenges really well

Rather than building large platforms, I create focused tools that serve clear purposes and respect natural rhythms instead of trying to dominate your attention.

My current focus is in these categories:
  • • tools to support game development (like Tane for cultivating your game design ideas, JamSession for timeboxing your creativity, or Mishon for tracking your game marketing tasks)
  • • Personal productivity tools (like reset for moments of recalibration or triday for daily reflection)

All tools are web-based, require no installation, and integrate seamlessly with existing workflows. Many offer versions that don't even require a login.

The key differences are:
  • • Focus on simplicity and specific use cases
  • • Designed for natural workflows rather than forced processes
  • • Many tools work without requiring login or setup
  • • Privacy-first approach with encrypted data where needed
I strive for a consistent update schedule:
  • • Major releases announced in blog posts and the newsletter
  • • Continuous (often weekly) refinement based on feedback

Koku comes from Japan's pre-modern time system where hours shifted with the seasons—reflecting my belief that tools should adapt to your natural rhythms. Just as the Japanese time system was built around human patterns, these tools are designed to work with your natural workflow, not against it.
